Dr. Schmaling is a clinical psychologist who earned her Ph.D. at the University of Washington. She is Professor Emerita of Psychology at Washington State University and Affiliate Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington School of Medicine. She is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association and a Diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology. Her research has resulted in over 150 peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and books, some of which are indexed here. She has been principal investigator or co-investigator on grants totaling approximately $25M, mostly from the National Institutes of Health.

Her research interests include clinical research methodology and research on depressive disorders and other chronic conditions. Her most recent book with Robert M. Kaplan (Stanford University), Rethinking Clinical Research: Methodology and Ethics, was published by Cambridge University Press in March 2025.
