Research Project: Middle and High School Students – Managing Writing Tasks with genAI

Dr. Michael Dunn, with Dr. Mary Rice at the University of New Mexico, have designed this study to analyze how students (ages 14-18) manage writing tasks with the use of generative artifical intelligence (genAI) tools. Students are asked to provide three samples from writing assignments within the past four months as comparison measures and then meet with one of the research team members in person or via web video (e.g., Zoom) to choose a writing task (e.g., narrative, expository/informational, persuasive/argumentative) and create about three paragaphs of text with the use of genAI tools. The research team member can ask questions as students plan and create their text to explore a student’s thought processes and reasons for choosing a given genAI tool.
