International Collaborations
Triandis (1994) estimated that more than 90% of psychological research has been generated in North America and Europe – areas which represent less than 19% of the world’s population. As a result, much of what we “know” to be true based on research published in academic journals may, in fact, not generalize to much of the rest of the world’s population. In one of the first systematic studies of this problem, Amir and Sharon (1987) found that less than half of the findings reported in articles published in top social psychology journals were able to be replicated in non-US samples.
To address this issue, over the past 3 decades, the CHEW lab has initiated and welcomed numerous international collaborations. This includes hosting visiting faculty from Nigeria, China, South Africa, Belgium, Croatia, and Italy, as well as visiting graduate students from Switzerland and Belgium. In turn, I have been a Visiting Scholar at the UN’s International Labor Organization in Geneva, the University of Rome, Chile, and South Africa. In addition to these research exchanges, the CHEW lab actively maintains numerous international research collaborations (e.g., South Korea, Chile, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, New Zealand, and Switzerland). Therefore, if you are an international scholar and would like to explore possible collaborative opportunities or international exchanges, please reach out to me at probst@wsu.edu.
